SM TOWN LIVE ‘08

Aug 22, 2008 Author: Meilin | Filed under: Asian Pop Culture

August 16 kicked the start of the SMTOWN LIVE ’08 concert, with 39 S.M. Entertainment artists hosting 45 thousand fans in Seoul’s Jamsil Olympic Stadium. The artists included Super Junior, DBSK, Girls’ Generation, The Grace, BoA, Zhang Li Yin and new group SHINee.

Many fans were lucky to catch all 13 Super Junior boys at the concert, as Hankyung, Siwon, Ryeowook, Donghae and Kyuhyun have been in China for SJ-M. The DBSK members, who have been preparing for the Korean comeback, sported new haircuts. It’s also important to note, for the many fan girls out there, the bared skin some members flash. Also BoA, who hadn’t performed on stage since AnyBand, looked much more mature while performing a few of her old songs.

Along with the live performances the extravaganza included dance-offs and collaborations among different groups. Shindong imitated Lee Hyori’s U Go Girl dance and Hyoyeon of SNSD worked some sexy moves. Long-time best friends Eunhyuk and Junsu made a short collaboration, and Changmin, Kangin, Sungmin and Heechul formed a small band. Heechul even faked a kiss with Sungmin.

The SMTOWN LIVE concert is scheduled to open in Shanghai on September 13 and in Bangkok on November 29. The date for the Beijing performance has not been set yet but should be announced soon. If any of you are lucky enough to attend a performance don’t hesitate to share your experience and post some pictures!

China and the Olympics

Aug 20, 2008 Author: Meilin | Filed under: Asian Pop Culture

On Aug. 8, more than 4 billion people worldwide watched the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. In the stadium alone there were 91,000 people watching one of China’s most acclaimed directors reveal his work. Zhang Yimou, director of films “Hero,” “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower,” who is known for his sensitivity to emotion and color, demonstrated his talent for cinematography while boasting 15,000 performers and a large LED screen. Three years of hard work finally paid off.

So far the country with the greatest number of medals is the U.S, but the country with the most gold medals is host country China, with 35 (as of August 16). This time around many world records have been set by China. Though South Korea has shown their dominance in female archery since 1984, China’s Zhang Juanjuan beat South Korea’s top three archers to win China’s first gold Olympic archery medal. In the women’s 200 fly 19-year-old Liu Zige won gold and set a new world record. Guo Jingjing won women’s 3m springboard and gave China the fifth diving gold, which makes their aim to sweep the gold in diving one step closer.

But along with the successes there have been some broken hearts. Liu Xiang, who became the first Chinese man to win a gold medal during Athens’ 110m hurdles, dropped out of this year’s heats due to injuries. In women’s gymnastics China’s favorite Cheng Fei was a huge contender for the Vault and Floor Exercise but a fall and numerous errors left her with one bronze.

With less than a week left at the Olympics you have to wonder what other upsets and world records will occur. Many people are already wondering what Zhang Yimou has planned for the closing ceremony and what London will do in preparation for hosting the 2012 Olympics. Whatever the rumors are, China will definitely close the Olympics with a bang.

There are always firsts for everybody, and in late August South Korea will have a first. Kim Ha Neul, Daniel Henney and over 100 professional photographers are getting ready to release Korea’s first photo movie. The movie, which will be comprised of still captures, uses seven colors to portray the love between the two main characters.

The Koreans are trying to use the photo movie concept that was first introduced in the 1960s, with the French experimental film La Jettée. The Korean film, “Sweet September,” took six months to capture.

Ha Neul joins the movie after her recently finished drama “On Air” and movie “Six Years in Love.” She’s known for her unconventional beauty, great talent and for co-starring with many of Korea’s top actors and actresses. Daniel Henney was featured before in the Cyworld blog but to refresh readers, Daniel is a U.S born Korean model and actor. His role in the 2007 film “My Father” exhibited Daniel’s vast potential for improvement. Aside from the photo movie he is currently working on the American film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

Ha Neul and Daniel are working together for the first time and yet fans are noticing the great chemistry between the two. One person even caught the two holding hands. Was it because they were acting for their movie? That’s up for you to judge.
