There seems to be an endless list of Asian heartthrobs, because they keep popping up on our radar. It’s a good thing, because maybe we won’t all have to fight over whom we want to marry. But…sharing is caring, right?

Jang Geun Suk is the guy to watch. The 21-year-old actor, who began the year as a vengeful prince in Hong Gil Dong, was recently voted Hot Movie Star at the Mnet’s 20’s Choice awards. As the event’s MC Geun Suk spent the night strutting his stuff, proving his charming personality and looks.
In Geun Suk’s popular drama roles in “Hwang Jin Yi” and “Hong Gil Dong,” the young actor brought a solemnity to the screen. But in his most recent movie Geun Suk shows a playful side. In “Baby and I,” which was released in Korean theaters Aug. 14, Geun Suk plays an 18-year-old who is faced with sudden fatherhood.
Aside from the movie, there’s the anticipated “Beethoven Virus” drama that Geun Suk stars in as a trumpet player. His co-stars include Kim Myung Min (“Bad Family” and “White Tower”) and newcomer Lee Ji Ah (“The Legend”). The drama revolves around the developing relationships among the three actors and the evolving love triangle. It begins its broadcast on Sept. 10.
As if acting was not enough, Jang Geun Suk released a single for the male cosmetics line Black ‘N Jean. The song, “Black Engine,” was written by Park Jin Young (JYP) and displays Geun Suk’s heartwarming baritone voice.
If you want to see more of Geun Suk watch: “Happy Life”; “Going Crazy Waiting”; and “Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do.” He also does a playful dance with Go Ara in the recent Etude CFs.

Is anyone looking for a good drama to watch? If you don’t need English subtitles tune in to “East of Eden,” which started airing this week. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding the drama, even long before its release date was revealed. The 50-episode series boasts an incredible main cast: Song Seung Hun, Yun Jung Hoon, Park Hae Jin, Lee Da Hae, Lee Yeon Hee, Han Ji Hye, Dennis Oh and Jo Min Ki.

The drama deals with the conflicts between two families and one man’s internal turmoil. Song Seung Hun, whose good looks have helped boost his career, plays the lead role who plans the revenge of his father’s death. “East of Eden” will be Seung Hun’s return to the television after a five-year hiatus. As viewer rates for MBC’s dramas haven’t been high, there is a lot of pressure on Seung Hun to perform well.
As we all know, many dramas spice it up with some love triangles (or squares). That’s where Lee Da Hae, Lee Yeon Hee and Han Ji Hye come in. These three beautiful women make the complicated plot even more complicated – in a good way – and will hopefully help this epic drama live up to its hype.
“East of Eden,” which is supposedly a 25 billion won production, airs every week on Mondays and Tuesdays. Along with an all-star cast it boasts a star-studded album with SG Wannabe, Seeya, Davichi, Black Pearl, M to M, F.T Island and many more.

Two weeks ago we updated readers with Lee Sun Gyun, whose popularity shot through the roof after his supporting role in “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince.” This week we bring news of another rising star, but on a sad note.

Lee Eon, who took on the role of the burly Hwang Min Yeop in Coffee Prince, passed away last Thursday morning. The model-turned-actor was on his way home after the wrap-up party for “Strongest Chil Woo” when he crashed into a guardrail in Hanam-dong. The police have not determined the cause of the motorcycle accident but they have not ruled out the possibility that Lee Eon was drunk.
The sudden death of such a promising star has made a big blow to the entertainment industry and many fans. But we should take a moment to celebrate his accomplishments. Lee Eon, whose real name is Park Sang Min, made his debut in 1999. A previous athlete who had competed in several Korean national ssireium (traditional Korean wrestling) competitions, Lee Eon lost 30 kilos in order to become a model. His hard work paid off, as he soon became a sought-after model.
He then made his acting debut in 2007 with a small part in “When Spring Comes” and his breakthrough role in Coffee Prince. A lover of music, Lee Eon also moonlighted as DJ Sangmin at Club Mass in Kangnam.
2008 sparked two new projects: “Who Are You?” and “Strongest Chil Woo.” He had just finished filming the latter two days prior to the accident.
Lee Eon’s funeral procession took place on Aug. 23 and was led by Coffee Prince co-star Gong Yoo, who had taken a special leave from his military duties. Over 100 friends and family have paid their respects. His death is certainly unexpected and he will be missed.
Check out what Cyworld members have been saying about this here and here.
Here’s Gong Woo’s message to Lee Eon.

August 16 kicked the start of the SMTOWN LIVE ’08 concert, with 39 S.M. Entertainment artists hosting 45 thousand fans in Seoul’s Jamsil Olympic Stadium. The artists included Super Junior, DBSK, Girls’ Generation, The Grace, BoA, Zhang Li Yin and new group SHINee.
Many fans were lucky to catch all 13 Super Junior boys at the concert, as Hankyung, Siwon, Ryeowook, Donghae and Kyuhyun have been in China for SJ-M. The DBSK members, who have been preparing for the Korean comeback, sported new haircuts. It’s also important to note, for the many fan girls out there, the bared skin some members flash. Also BoA, who hadn’t performed on stage since AnyBand, looked much more mature while performing a few of her old songs.
Along with the live performances the extravaganza included dance-offs and collaborations among different groups. Shindong imitated Lee Hyori’s U Go Girl dance and Hyoyeon of SNSD worked some sexy moves. Long-time best friends Eunhyuk and Junsu made a short collaboration, and Changmin, Kangin, Sungmin and Heechul formed a small band. Heechul even faked a kiss with Sungmin.
The SMTOWN LIVE concert is scheduled to open in Shanghai on September 13 and in Bangkok on November 29. The date for the Beijing performance has not been set yet but should be announced soon. If any of you are lucky enough to attend a performance don’t hesitate to share your experience and post some pictures!

On Aug. 8, more than 4 billion people worldwide watched the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony. In the stadium alone there were 91,000 people watching one of China’s most acclaimed directors reveal his work. Zhang Yimou, director of films “Hero,” “House of Flying Daggers” and “Curse of the Golden Flower,” who is known for his sensitivity to emotion and color, demonstrated his talent for cinematography while boasting 15,000 performers and a large LED screen. Three years of hard work finally paid off.

So far the country with the greatest number of medals is the U.S, but the country with the most gold medals is host country China, with 35 (as of August 16). This time around many world records have been set by China. Though South Korea has shown their dominance in female archery since 1984, China’s Zhang Juanjuan beat South Korea’s top three archers to win China’s first gold Olympic archery medal. In the women’s 200 fly 19-year-old Liu Zige won gold and set a new world record. Guo Jingjing won women’s 3m springboard and gave China the fifth diving gold, which makes their aim to sweep the gold in diving one step closer.
But along with the successes there have been some broken hearts. Liu Xiang, who became the first Chinese man to win a gold medal during Athens’ 110m hurdles, dropped out of this year’s heats due to injuries. In women’s gymnastics China’s favorite Cheng Fei was a huge contender for the Vault and Floor Exercise but a fall and numerous errors left her with one bronze.
With less than a week left at the Olympics you have to wonder what other upsets and world records will occur. Many people are already wondering what Zhang Yimou has planned for the closing ceremony and what London will do in preparation for hosting the 2012 Olympics. Whatever the rumors are, China will definitely close the Olympics with a bang.
